A Clever Girl’s Guide to Skin Care Do’s and Don’ts

Why does walking into an aisle of skin care products always lead us to a VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION “Which among these items will work for me?” It’s funny because all of us will end up going home with a bunch of skin care products that we have never used before, just because we’re very determined to solve our skin problems. But after weeks or months of using the products, nope. NO. GOOD. RESULTS. AT. ALL.

We don’t have to put the blame on products most of the time! Sometimes it is us who do not know how to PROPERLY do our routine. So really, what could be the wrong thing that we’re doing? Hmmm.

SKIN CARE DOs AND DONTs

Skin Care Don’ts:

  • NEVER EVER FORGET YOUR DAY AND NIGHT SKIN CARE ROUTINE

Waking up as your alarm goes off thinking to yourself, “Do I really need to wash my face today? I just did my routine last night!” But hey, doing your skin care in the morning is as crucial as your night time routine! You need protection against all the contaminants that may, you know, get into your face. And we don’t want that. Quit blaming your snooze button, even if you’re in a hurry, don’t make your skin feel neglected. It deserves the same care. And doing a solid morning skin care routine doesn’t mean you are not going to exert the same effort at night! Imagine all of the dirt that your face absorbed the whole day? Are you going to allow them to stay there for another 8 hours? (Nope! Bad idea.) Stop your nocturnal-makeup-wearing habit! Aside from the acne or any other damages it may cause to your skin, sleeping with make-up on will impede the skin’s natural exfoliation process. As we all know, we shed 50 million skin cells per day but if you have these cosmetics on, they won’t be able to shed by itself, resulting in a gray dull appearance of the skin.

  • BREAK UP WITH MAKE UP WIPES

Again, I know how hard it is for us to wash our face before hitting our pillows. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll use your very handy make up remover wipes! PLEASE. DO. NOT. Unless it is made up of 100% organic or natural ingredients (I’m not being biased here, trust me!) The usual wipes contain very irritating and drying ingredients. Imagine wiping your face to dissolve the make up using chemical-based wipes that may cause burning sensation, skin irritation and dryness! Try to avoid these items no matter how inviting they are! You skin will thank you later.

  • DO NOT GO OVER-EXFOLIATING OR NOT EXFOLIATING AT ALL

It is true that exfoliation makes our skin appear youthful as it helps you get rid of the blemishes. Exfoliation helps in unclogging our pores which will make the absorption of the products that we are going to apply better. However, over-exfoliation will make your skin very sensitive and dry. Also, scrubbing too hard will remove more skin than necessary! So, a friendly advice, make sure that you are just exfoliating maximum of twice weekly. Remember that our goal here is not to peel off our skin as it causes more damage! We just have to buff away the excess skin in order to make it softer.

  • DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE!

Why does touching our face feels so normal, right? THIS IS THE SIN THAT I AM COMMITTING EVERYDAY. So, what should we do in order to stop this horrible habit? Let’s think about the disadvantages it can cause us. Okay, so touching our face will lead to picking. And what’s next? Scarring! If our face has wounds (Forgive yourself for pulling the dried pimple) it will be more posed to bacteria that for all we know, will cause infection. Do you want that to happen? Of course not!

  • DON’T USE MAKE UP THAT CONTAINS HARMFUL INGREDIENTS

Have you ever considered checking the ingredients of the make up products that you put into your face? Or are you just after how this foundation covers your blemishes? Don’t be like that! I guess all of us are aware that excessive use of these damaging products will result to a breakouts, blackheads or whiteheads. What could be the main reason why we put so much makeup unto our face? Probably to make us feel prettier? Or for maximum coverage? But don’t you think we can feel beautiful even if we’re bare faced IF our skin is healthy? Do not use anything that can trigger damage! Why not try certified organic products that will help during the transition of wearing makeup and rocking a woke up like this look?

Skin Care Dos:

  • ALWAYS KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

Purchasing products that are not intended for your skin type is like wasting your money over a food that you don’t eat. And mind you, not because this specific cleanser works for a friend, it will also do the same effect to yours. No, our skin is so tricky we have to find our holy grail products by ourselves.

  • TRY TO SLEEP AT LEAST 8 HOURS A DAY

Completing an 8-hour sleep seems to be very impossible with our busy schedule, hence the saying “You have pimples because you’re staying up too late at night.” Quit doing the habit if the only reason is social media. Studies show that staring at the blue and white light emitted from digital screens stops your brain from releasing melatonin (a hormone which lets your body know when it’s time to sleep). Let’s just think about the benefits of having a well rested night, right?

  • HAVE A HEALTHY DIET AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Having a flawless skin doesn’t depend on using the best products for your face. Remember that whatever we put inside our body shows on the outside! What am I talking about? Food! We are all after how we do our skin care routine, but have you ever considered checking what you are eating? You may have all the products that are intended to work for oily skin, but you cannot let go of the french fries that you are eating. Hmmm, ironic right? Always keep in mind that what we eat affects the health of our skin as well. And we will not be limiting the topic to food! We need water too! Keeping yourself from dehydration goes a long way. Aside from the health benefits that can result to that, it is pretty noticeable that your skin will start to have a healthy glow. Remember to drink at least 8 glasses of water to flush those unwanted toxins in our body.

  • ALWAYS BE GENTLE WITH YOUR SKIN AND USE LUKEWARM WATER WHEN DOING YOUR ROUTINE

Never ever go hardcore with your face. It is advisable to slowly cleanse it using just the tip of your fingers in a small circular motion. Also, always go for the cleansers that do not produce much bubbles. Why? Because the soapy the product is, the more alkaline it can be. Imagine having a cleanser with a pH of 12, it is quite far with the physiological pH of the skin which is between 4.5 to 5.5, right? Stop buying these as it destroys our protective film!

And by the way, it is not true that cold water closes our pores and hot water opens them. They do not have muscles to close or open. Hot water can dry out the face as it washes away the essential oils whereas cold water can cause damage to the capillaries in the face therefore, irritates it. Keep your skin looking and feeling great by using lukewarm water instead.

  • SWITCH TO CERTIFIED ORGANIC PRODUCTS!

Are you ready to dive into natural beauty? Switch to organic! Think about all of the benefits these products do! It is pretty obvious that organic products that are certified are proven safe and effective. It is free from preservatives, fragrances and dyes that trigger allergic reactions. If you think that your products only come in contact with the  outermost layers of your skin, you couldn’t be more wrong. Great portions are absorbed into the deeper layers and will make what’s inside, more damaged. Switching to organic is like a fresh start as we strive for health and beauty! But don’t forget that the major thing that we have to DO is to LOVE WHAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE AND LEARN HOW TO MAKE OURSELVES EVEN BETTER and DON’T GIVE UP! It may really be a rough period but surely, today is the best day to start doing what is right!
